Hiking in Castellón: Routes for Beginners to Advanced Hikers

Castellón province is a hiker’s secret: coastal greenways, sharp limestone needles, mountain ridges and river canyons all within easy reach of Castellón de la Plana. This guide covers the best routes for every level, from the beginner-friendly Via Verde to multi-day treks like the Ruta dels 7 Pobles, with distances, difficulty, and transport options.

Quick orientation: are the hikes near Castellón city?

Most of the best trails sit outside the flat city, along the coast (Benicàssim / Oropesa), in the Desert de les Palmes natural park, the Tinença de Benifassà (Ruta dels 7 Pobles) and river gorges like Montanejos, but all are reachable by public transport or short drives.

  • Duration: 4–6 hours, depending on pace & sections chosen

Agulles de Santa Àgueda – Benicàssim (Moderate)

  • Distance: ~3–6 km (short loop options)
  • Duration: 1–3 hours depending on variant

Jagged limestone formations and coastal views make this route highly photogenic and rewarding without requiring full mountain fitness. Expect exposed rocky sections.

Ruta dels 7 Pobles – Tinença de Benifassà (Multi-day / Moderate→Challenging)

  • Distance & format: A multi-stage traverse linking seven villages (La Pobla de Benifassà / Benifassà, Fredes, El Boixar, Ballestar, Castell de Cabres, Bel, Coratxà). Many hikers split it across 3–4 days; each stage varies in distance and elevation.

Classic long-distance traverse through the wild Tinença de Benifassà, cultural villages, remote tracks, and sublime mountain scenery. This is often undertaken as a multi-day trekking experience with overnight stays in village guesthouses or refuges.

Practical: Book accommodation ahead in small villages; carry cash and check water availability per stage.

Desert de les Palmes Ridge Routes (Advanced)
